Light Source’s main office was only four blocks away. She didn’t need a car to get there. The walk would give her time to clear her head, if that were at all possible.

Nathan would be angry at her. She couldn’t blame him. What she had done was a betrayal—to his trust, to Light Source, and to the community.

Pete smiled at her from the reception desk. He was on the night shift again, manning the reception desk and taking care of the general security of the office building. He tilted his head and looked behind Ivy.

“Pixy isn’t with me this time.”

“I see.”

His gaze landed on her face and then returned to his computer monitor. When she didn’t want to engage in a conversation, it showed.

She strode toward the elevators.

“Ivy.”

She stopped and turned. “Yes?”

She had seen the puzzlement on Pete’s face when she’d first entered, but she wasn’t in the mood to talk, so she didn’t ask about it.

“I hope there’s nothing that comes of this, but I have to tell you so you can let Nathan know.”

She returned to the reception desk, which faced the large foyer. From behind the desk, Pete could see almost anyone who came in and out of the building’s main entrance.

Pete was in his late fifties. He manned this reception desk, waiting for the time he could retire, move to a country town, and live a quiet life. He wasn’t the sort of man who wanted to cause trouble or get tangled in unnecessary corporate messes.

If it wasn’t important, he wouldn’t interfere with Light Source business.

“Half an hour ago, there was a man who came in here and looked at that board for a good five minutes,” he told her with a low voice, pointing at the board on the wall behind him that listed the companies that leased offices in this building.

“Why is that strange? Isn’t the board there for people to read?”

“You would know better than I do, Ivy. You’re in the security business. Without a swipe card or chip, you can’t get to your floor. So if you’re here to see someone, that person would have issued you a temporary pass to swipe or buzzed you in as you arrived. So you’d only stand here and look at the board for that long if you didn’t know who you were looking for or you didn’t have an invitation to their floor.”

“But how can you be so sure he has anything to do with Light Source?”

“Because when a couple of visitors to Light Source came out of the elevator, he followed them out. It could be a coincidence—maybe he couldn’t find what he was looking for and left at the same time as they did. But you never know. Too many strange things have happened in the last week around here, and that makes me nervous.”

“Thanks, Pete. I’ll talk to Nathan.”

The elevator pinged. She gave him a thank-you-and-goodbye gesture with her hand and strode to the door.

In minutes, she was walking across the luxurious
